Siena, Italy, October 10, 2012

Louise awoke with the sun dappling morning light into the exquisite suite. She had never had a place feel so much like a person. Although Paris, Burgundy, and her Caribbean Island each had its own distinct character, Siena, and its bank, Monte di Paschi, felt like actual characters with individual lives and personal drama living an epic tale. With the town and the bank in starring roles, it was like reading a play and rooting for both the protagonist and the antagonist. Not a spoiled child who had been given too much too soon, or a socially ambitious woman (or man) marrying into wealth and family name. Neither seemed fitting analogies. Siena was like a prize fighter after holding the world champion title, then losing it, and then winning it back. But now the legend was being mismanaged, dogged by greed, ego, and gullibility. From experience, Louise knew Monte di Paschi bank was the victim and not the villain. There were always dark forces that worked against anything that was sacred.

With a renewed sense of hope, she dressed and prepared a note for LaFontaine’s messenger letting him know that she had the photographic evidence. Then she went down just in time to find the quirky horseman pissing off Oscar the doorman. She shook his hand, the message thus as good as delivered. It was amazing when her scrappy plans came together. As if on cue, Kostas appeared, and they went for coffee at the Bar Bazar to discuss their next move.

“Let’s divide and conquer for a few days,” Louise said. “You keep reaching out to investors for MPS, and I’ll start drafting a financial restructuring of MPS, using various levels of your investment funding. We can touch base in a few days.”

“Sounds good. That will also give me time to work on my personal project of the Palio Horserace.” He put his fists up in the boxing stance.

She smiled and they exchanged cheek kisses good-bye. She went to her hotel room and re-packed her go-bag which was always ready in case of emergency. She heard a swishing sound and picked up a sealed envelope that had been pushed under the door. It was from Dario Rossellini.

She went down to the concierge. “Maurizio, I noticed you’re almost always available. Which I appreciate.” He smiled knowingly. “But if I ever need to leave unexpectedly, is there a self-check-out where I can leave the key if necessary?”

He pointed to an antique box mounted on the wall near the check-in desk. “We have your credit card on file, so you can just place the key in that box.”

“Perfect. Oh, could I have afternoon tea served in the library at 16:00 today?”

“Nessun problema.”

“Grazie mille.”

She left the hotel to finally take the opportunity to visit the Siena Cathedral and its famous Duomo. She walked the short distance past the Piazza del Campo and up the hill to the gothic Cathedral that had taken almost forty years to build beginning in 1215.
